Medical Treatment for Depression

There are ways to treat depression, one of which is through the use of medical treatment. With proper medical care you can get medicine to help deal with and treat depression. There are many different types of medicine that can be taken, such as Prozac and Zoloft. Each type treats depression in a similar manner, changing the balance of certain chemicals in certain parts of the body. They do have great effects, though most also have harmful effects too. The Catholic Church doesn't condemn antidepressants, though it does frown upon abuse of medication, believing that all help ultimately comes from God and He would want us to get help.

These antidepressant medications have good benefits, improving emotions, such as happiness. They help relieve feelings of sadness and loneliness, improving some one's attitude. By taking the antidepressants, the person's mood is elevated. In addition, they can help people with depression be more outward acting and interact with people, which is especially helpful for children and adolescents. People can have normal lives; going to work or school and being with other people.

Though, with the good benefits, comes some bad side effects. These include both physical and emotional pain and bad actions. Some medicines, such as Elvail or Surmontil, cause: dry mouth, blurred vision, sleepiness, muscle twitching, and increased heart rate, to name a few. Others, such as Prozac and Zoloft, may cause: sexual problems, dizziness, nausea, and insomnia. Most of these tell you to seek medical care immediately when experiencing these effects. Still, others may actually increase suicidal thinking in children and adolescents who already suffer from depression. in addition, they change the way a person behaves and acts, making them not be themselves.

  1. Medicine is not a bad thing but I do believe that it could lead to bad habits. It is not good to be dependent on anything. I have seen people who truely needed it and it did make me look at it a little differently but that is just me. I believe one should stay away from medication as much as possible unless a dire need for it. It could always hurt you in the end.

  2. Even though medice does help i dont believe that it is the best way of handling Depression or Suicide. There have been many cases where people become addicted to the medicine and become to dependent on it. In my opinion the best medicine that is in the world would be communion or your "spiritual medicine." As a Christian it is in my beliefs that God will cure me and help me.

  3. I believe that medical treatment, proscribed by a doctor can really help treat depression. As long as the medication is taken as per directed and not in an abusive way. It is true that some medications have side-effects, but if the good out weighs the bad then it is ok. Medication is a way to treat depression without using up a lot of time and acts quicker to relieve symptoms of depression. This is to say that medicine is but one way to treat depression and might not be the right way for everyone. Others might seek spiritual treatment or counseling, all have their strong and weak points.

  4. I believe that medicine can be a great way for the victim to heal, but it can only happen if the person actually is seeking the help. I believe that any gestures to help by the person's family or friends will be useless if the person does not have any intentions of healing themselves. I think that medicine, with the proper use and dosage, can really help the person reach their goal of recovery.
